Onkyo 670 - Use for Video?

Onkyo 670 - Use for Video?

    Hi Guys,

So I just purchased a 670 receiver and some 5Bs to go along with my new 5C and old Velodyne.  I am anxious to say the least.  While I'm waiting (patiently, not!) I thought of a question.

I'm no expert, and I have a simple set-up -- I don't use the system for games or anything, just TV and movies, etc..  Currently I have the DVR and Blu-ray going straight into the TV using HDMI cables.  The TV is a Pioneer Kuro that is essentially perfect and I don't want to screw that up.

Is there any reason why I should use the Onkyo video connections?  What about other more high-end AV receivers, why would one want to use them??

     Thanks,

    Bill

    You mean the 607?

That unit will upscale a non-HD source to 1080i, if you go up to the 706 that is the cheapest model that will upscale to 1080p.

You'll want to pass the HDMI through the 607 so that you get audio to the speakers, many outputs on TVs will be video only and even if they aren't it's likely the TV will process the signal and degrade the sound.

You can also set the 607 to pass through and it won't touch the video signal so you shouldn't see any degradation there.

Sorry, yes I mean the 607.

I currently have the DVR's HDMI cable going to the TV, and separate audio cables going to my old receiver (I don't use the sound from the TV.)   The BluRay is connected the same way (HDMI to TV, audio cables to receiver).

Will I be changing that when I get the Onkyo?  If so, why?

Anyway i'm just anxious to get the equipment... I''ll probably just call you when/if I need help after it arrives.

Thanks again for your help on the phone earlier today,

    Bill

It depends on what kind of audio cables you are using and what type of Blu-Ray player you have.

Honestly the simplest is just to run all of the HDMI through your receiver first, and since you can set it up to pass the video signal I don't see any drawbacks to connecting everything that way.
