    cheaper receiver w/ emotiva xpa-3?

After reading here and on avsforum for awhile, I am considering upgrading my system.  I already posted a question about the speakers in the speaker forum, but I am also wondering about how best to power them.  I was thinking about getting the Denon 3808 and powering the fronts with the Emotiva xpa-3.  Sounds like Browninggold has done this and loves it if I remember right.  My question is, if I'm powering the fronts with the emotiva, can I get away with a substantially cheaper receiver or would I be losing important capabilities besides power?  I'm not nearly as concerned about video as I am audio.  I just want to make sure that if I'm finally buying good speakers, I help them do their best by connecting them to capable equipment!  Thanks in advance for everyone's advice!

Georgie-  Yes you could purchase something with less power than the 3808.  That way a amp will just be powering your surrounds.  At the time of my purchase I did not plan on buying a amp later, but with that being said I do have plenty of oomph for my surrounds and sub.  If you want the advance sound codecs DD+, HD audio make sure the A/V receiver has those options.  Also I wanted a receiver with ethernet for updates, internet radio etc, which the 3808 has.  I also wanted at least 4 hdmi inputs.  Just keep in mind when searching you look at all the features you want and need and get that one.  Maybe take a look at seperates.  Browning

Thanks - that is helpful advice Browninggold.  Thanks too for your post in to my speaker question.

Browninggold pretty much summed it up perfectly. Woulda said the same thing. Emotiva does have good processor if you want to check it out.

    Here's a link:     http://emotiva.com/umc1.shtm

If I could do it over again, I would've done seperates, not that I'm not happy with my Onkyo 875, it's great, but seperates would be a dream. Maybe next time eh?

Re: cheaper receiver w/ emotiva xpa-3?

Thanks mjwarburton.  I've never really looked into separates before, but after trying to educate myself a bit it sounds like having a separate pre-pro would offer better sound because space isn't taken up by the internal amp that a receiver has so it can be used for other things.  So then my question is, would using a regular receiver (e.g., the denon 3808) with an amp for the speakers (like the emotiva xpa-5) be the same doing separates?  When looking online at the emotiva umc1 link you provided and reading in avsforum about the outlaw 990 and the new outlaw 997 coming out, it seems like the denon 3808 still has features the others don't - and the outlaw actually costs more.  So is there an advantage to getting a dedicated pre-pro that I'm not thinking about rather than getting a receiver and running the speakers with a separate amp.  Sorry if that's a stupid question.  I'm an audio geek wannabe, but am not quite there yet (as I'm sure you all can tell).

One advantage is that a dedicated pre-pro generally has higher quality digital-to-analogue converters which leads to higher quality (closer to the source) sound.  Another (theoretical, in my opinion) advantage is, without an internal amp, there is less circuitry to cause signal interference in a pre/pro.  A green advantage of going with true separates instead of using a receiver as a pre/pro is that it minimizes wasting energy.  When you use a receiver as a pre/pro, the receiver's amps are still active and drawing current, even if the speakers aren't hooked up to it.  Hope that helps.

That does help a lot - thank you!  If anyone else has any thoughts they'd like to add I'm all ears.  Thanks.

Re: cheaper receiver w/ emotiva xpa-3?

As mentioned by mjwarburton the Emo umc1 would be a good start for a seperate.  Suppose to ship out sometime in June.  I never have owned seperates so I cannot help too much in that dept.  Just do a lot of research.
