How do I adjust the screen on my Panasonic plasma?

When I watch my blu ray movies on my PS3, the only way I can fill the screen is by switching the setting to zoom, when you do that it cuts part of the picture off. I heard it is not good to watch tv for an extended period of time with the letterboxes on top and bottom. Is there a way to fix this problem? I have a panasonic PATH58PZ800 58" plasma.

Hi David-  In your menu their should be a option for widescreen 16:9 ratio.  Select that one.  For full screen select the 4:3 option.
    24 hours in a day ... 24 beers in a case ... coincidence?

In there menu there is not a place for setting it to 16:9. That is my problem.

Re: How do I adjust the screen on my Panasonic plasma?

Other than zoom, there is no option.  Black bars are normal for most Blu-ray discs.  Your TV is 16:9 and the movie is filmed in (typically) 2.35:1.  Only if you had a projector and a 2.35:1 screen would you be able to eliminate the black bars.

To have it fill up the screen, you'll have to zoom but I would never do that, personally.

Re: How do I adjust the screen on my Panasonic plasma?

I don't understand why they don't make blu-rays in 16:9? Is there a setting on my PS3 to get rid of the black bars? I heard that you don't suppose to leave the black bars on a plasma it will damage it. Is that true?

Re: How do I adjust the screen on my Panasonic plasma?

As PJ said, this is normal. The only way to eliminate them is to use zoom. Modern plasma screens are not as succeptable to burn in as the older ones. I have watched many blu-rays with the bars, and my plasma is just fine. Not that I would run 24/7 with the bars, but for a few hours for a movie or two, I am sure you have nothing to worry about.

I have a PS3 as well, and I am sure there is nothing to eliminate the bars. Even if there was, it would be exactly the same as using Zoom on your screen.

Re: How do I adjust the screen on my Panasonic plasma?

Is there any blu-ray players out there that will adjust the picture so it is not zoom but will take up the whole screen? Seems kinda worthless to have a 58" screen and have 5 inches cut off the top and bottom. Kinda makes me mad as far as technology is and they can't even make blu-rays in 16:9.

Re: How do I adjust the screen on my Panasonic plasma?

Not sure about that...but the end result would be the same....streched/distorted/cropped images (much like when you stretch a standard 4:3 image using widescreen). I do admit, I do stretch 4:3 to widescreen, as there is nothing chopped of when doing it. It takes a couple minutes to "ignore" the fact that you have stretched it. But I never zoom, as it chops off stuff from the left and right of the image to do so.

I am currently on an assignment where I am living in a hotel (God do I miss my plasma and Aperions!). I have a standard 4:3 tv, and have noticed that some channels are doing a similar thing to fill the screen. I can tell because some text that appears on the left and right of the screen is lopped off.

It is not that they cannot make the BluRays in that format...I am sure they could...they are just maintaining the apect ratio of the original. IMHO, that is more desirable than distorting the image to fill the screen. For those that desire the entire screen filled, they can just zoom. But there is a cost in doing so. As I stated, I never do this.

Give it some time David....you will probably get used to it, and not even notice it anymore over time. Well...at least I did.

Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspect_ratio_(image) {Note that if you click this hyperlink, go up to your address bar and add the parenthesis at the end and hit enter on your keyboard,}  for an interesting read about this type of stuff.

Correct.  If you want to get mad at something, get mad at filmmakers for making movies in that aspect ratio.  All subsequent technology is intended to do is to recreate it in as true a form as it's capable of.

Re: How do I adjust the screen on my Panasonic plasma?

Most reviewers will turn on the plasma and with a test disk put it on 60% white for 100 hours.  This gets the colors broken in so to speak in that they change during the fist few hours.  Burn in is also more likely in this time frame so this break in period reducees that posibillity. The set should also have a burn in eraser function in there some where.  Some DVDs do run at 16 by 9.  I never zoom, I like it the way it was filmed.

    Cheers

    Scottieman,

You stated this in your post:

For those that desire the entire screen filled, they can just zoom. But there is a cost in doing so. As I stated, I never do this.

If you use zoom will it damage your tv? I thought I read somewhere with a plasma tv you need to make sure the picture takes up all the screen to keep from damaging it so that is why I been doing zoom. I did not know much about buying a HDTV and wish now I would have know a little more of what to look for. My friend told me he has a tv where he can adjust the picture without going on total zoom, I am surprised with the high ratings CNET game my Panasonic 58" plasma that my tv would not do the same thing. I am kinda bummed out, I spent a lot of money for this tv and wanted a big one and got a 58" but with the letter boxes I got actually a 48" tv.

Re: How do I adjust the screen on my Panasonic plasma?

    David,

You are unjustly crucifying your set for something it has no control over. Did you read the wiki post that I referenced? That explains aspect ratios, and the side effects of them. LCD is the same...does not matter...16x9 is the same regardless.

You won't damage your TV on zoom, and you most likely will not damage it if you are not on zoom. If you have over 100 hours on it, I would not worry about it. Just don't do bars 24/7.

All widescreen TVs have this "issue" which really is not an issue. If you had a standard TV, and you were watching a widescreen presentation, you would have the left and right sides chopped off.

Since there is no standard ratio anymore, you will just have to find your comfort zone when the ratio is something other than 16x9. You made no mention of the left and right bars when watching a 4x3 presentation.

Re: How do I adjust the screen on my Panasonic plasma?

Yes it has nothing to do with your TV and everything to do with the fact that the screens in theaters are 2.35:1.

You see the black bars because the disc is keeping the proper aspect ratio in tact with respect to how it was shot.

If those black bars weren't there you'd actually be missing part of the picture, which in my mind is much worse than an overall smaller image.

Re: How do I adjust the screen on my Panasonic plasma?

I don't watch anything on 4x3, all I watch is what comes on Direct Tv and I believe they switch it over I am not sure how it works but I most of the time watch tv on "full" and when watching direct tv it most of the times fills the screen sometimes it does not though.  All this high tech stuff is new to me, I use to have a RCA 32" Tube tv with no surround sound. Now I have a 58" Panasonic Plasma  HD DVR Direct tv with Aperion  5t's, 5c, 10d and 4b satelites with an Onkyo 607 receiver.  A very good improvement!  I can't wait to Football season GO BRONCOS!

Re: How do I adjust the screen on my Panasonic plasma?

HD television shows are filmed in 16:9.  That's why they fill up your TV.  Again...It has to do with your source material, not the TV.

I'd really consider reading up on the aspect ratio wiki that was posted earlier.  Should answer a lot of your questions.
