    5T vs. 6T – Sound Quality

Can anyone describe the sonic differences between the 5T and 6T?  I have the 5s and I’m thinking of upgrading.  Is it worth the upgrade price?

I will let you know in a few weeks. I have had the 5T's for almost a year and called to trade up to 6T's a few days ago. I should have them next week.

    Re: 5T vs. 6T – Sound Quality

    Hi Mike,

I had 5T's/5C for about 8 months and then upgraded to 6T's/6C. My listening area is approx 20ft wide by 12ft deep with an opening on one side to the dining area (additional 10ft wide) so my area is a medium size room. I think the differences will be more significant in a larger room but I'll give you my impressions. I loved the 5T's and thought they gave me a great depth with solid mids. I had them crossed at 80 to my 8D. With the 6T's the mids are considerably fuller and the low end is much stronger. I've since changed my towers to cross at 50/60 to the 8D although the 6T's can be used full and also sound great. I use a second receiver (old pioneer sx-1050) and comparing the 5T and 6T with that receiver is more striking since there is no sub in that setup. The 6T's are considerably stronger in the mids and lows but that's to be expected from the specs.

In all I think the 5T's are a fantastic speaker especially if you use a sub. If you listen to music without a sub the 6T's are a better bet. I'm happy I did the upgrade. The only disappointing aspect is listening on my onkyo 805 to music on all channel sound and hearing the 4B's try to compete with the 6T's! Also keep in mind that the boxes for the 6T's are big enough for you to pack another person in. Make sure you plan on somewhere to store them!

In any case I think the difference from the 5T to the 6T is more like night and day for 2 channel music. The difference between the 5C and 6C is more dependent on the size of the room and how far you sit from the TV.

    Hope that helps

    Jason

    Jason,

Couldn't have put it better myself.  Spot on.

One additional thing to note is that the 6T's are a rather large speaker too.  There's not a huge difference in the height and width from the 5T.  However, the 6T is about twice the depth of the 5T.  So you need more floorspace for the 6T too.

    Re: 5T vs. 6T – Sound Quality

I got my 5T/5C/10D last week. They are still breaking in, but I'm very impressed with the clarity, detail, and imaging. The upper mids are still a little strident, but much better than at first. I'm assuming that will continue to improve over the next week or so.

However,  I find the mid-bass lacking. The room  is 16' x 22' with an 11' opening to another room on the front left side. As measured with an inexpensive SPL meter using tight band (1/3 octave) noise, there is a noticeable dip between 100 Hz - 220 Hz. Increasing the crossover to 120 Hz helps, but of course localization starts occurring.

I'm thinking of upgrading to the 6Ts, leaving the 5C/10D in place for the time being. My hope is that the increased driver size and substantial increase in cabinet volume will increase the mid-bass. One of my concerns would be a change in the mid-range with the change in drivers. Once the drivers finish "mellowing," the mid and highs should be just about perfect. I'd hate to fix the mid-bass at a cost to the mids/highs.

Guidance and advice is encouraged!!! Thanks.

    Re: 5T vs. 6T – Sound Quality

Hi Patchrob and thanks for your purchase. Glad you're enjoying the 5T setup. Some of what you're describing is definitely dependent on the break-in, but I also think there's a couple of things you may be able to do to get the sound dialed. The speakers should have a very neutral response between 100-220 hz, and what you're measuring may be a product of the rooms response and/or the speakers' interactions with the room; is it possible for you to try moving them fore or aft and/or closer/farther to the sides a bit? Or, the second thing you could do is also trying to move your listening position front to back a bit as well. I'd recommend trying this and giving them a bit more time to break in to see what happens.

    Happy Listening,

    Oliver

I would also suggest you try the following: put the feet on the front of the towers and then adjust them so the top tilts back some.  That helped me tweek in my 4Ts.

    Cheers

    Re: 5T vs. 6T – Sound Quality

Thanks Oliver and Russ for the quick suggestions!! I moved the 5Ts closer to the back wall, from 14" to 6" and that seems to bring back much of the "missing" bass range. The sound quality from these relatively small boxes continues to amaze me.

    Re: 5T vs. 6T – Sound Quality

No problem, glad that helped, and glad you're lovin' the 5Ts. I'm sure you'll enjoy them even more once they've got a few more break in hours behind them.

Let us know if we can be of further assistance, and happy listening!

    Re: 5T vs. 6T – Sound Quality

As I posted earlier I recently upgraded my 5Ts for 6Ts and will give my non professional opinion. These are paired with a 5C, 10D and 4Bs. First thing to notice is the difference in size. Although they are described as not much taller or wider than the 5T they are much deeper and a lot heavier. My wife quickly noticed the difference in size. As for sound, the difference in bass is huge. These speakers fill the room much more than the 5Ts which brings out the midrange. I thought the 5Ts were just fine and had no complaints. I really only upgraded so I would not regret it later but after hearing them both there is a big difference in a large room.

    Re: 5T vs. 6T – Sound Quality

I agree. I had the 5T's, and enjoyed them to the point that I was going to add the sub. I decided to skip the sub and get the 6T's, and have no regrets.

If you have the room for the depth size of the 6's, do it right the first time, and then 'Don't Look Back'

Thank you for the comparison pics.  That is great to see the differences between the 5T and the 6T.

Yeah sorry about that, the photo attaching on this forum software is pretty buggy.  Linking from photobucket and flickr works though.
