    Gurus...need help to make decision...

    Attachment: FamilyRoom.jpg

Looking for front, center and rear speakers. Got Aperion from browsing...never heard of it before.

    My current setup is

    • Yamaha RXV1800
    • Panasonic 50 inch plasma 850u
    • Outlaw LFM1-EX sub (purchased a few months before and not planning to change it)
    • Bose satellites (hate these....bought it when my knowledge was limited and fell into the trap of Bose without researching...years ago)

Room is 18x13 with one end open to Kitchen. pls see attached room plan.

Sub is placed in the corner next to the rears.

I was looking at 5T towers, center and dipole surrounds. Will this be sufficient for my room configuration? I use my system for 70% movies and 30% music.

Waiting for your advise to help decide.

    Thanks,

    Ravi.

    Hello Ravi,

Thanks for your inquiry and welcome to the forum!

Yes I think 5Ts and a 5C up front would be great choices for 70/30 HT/music in a room of your size.  Not sure if the 5DBs are going to work so well for you though, since it looks like you'll be placing them in a corner and since the woofers are on an angled face you'd likely be shooting sound right into the back wall.

If that is indeed the case you'll probably be better off with a front firing speaker like the 4B or 5B.

Hope that helps, but just let me know if you have further questions.

    Jason, thanks for your reply.

I will be placing the DB's on the backwall behind the sofa. It will not be in the corner. Please clarify if it will be a problem.

Also would 6T's be a overkill for my size of the room? I don't have much room in the front.  I don't want to buy 5t's and realize that I should have gone for the 6t's.

Would there be a problem matching the speakers with the outlaw sub?

Re: Gurus...need help to make decision...

Gotcha well along the back wall the 4BPs will likely work just as well so if you do go with a bipole style speaker that's what I would recommend.  You want to give them ideally two feet from the side walls and at least one foot at the minimum.  Otherwise we're back to the 4B or 5Bs.

6Ts won't necessarily be overkill for your size room and it looks like you are at least 12-13 feet from the fronts, which is plenty of space for the 6Ts to do their thing.

The thing is the difference between the 5T and the 6Ts will be most apparent when you are listening to music, so whether that step up in performance is worth it for 30% of your usage is a decision you'll have to make, but the fuller mids and bass extension of the 6Ts over the 5Ts for music is quite beneficial in my opinion.

Yes you can definitely use the Outlaw sub with our speakers, you can't hear any timbre or tonal quality at the low frequencies that a sub produces anyway and the LFM-1 is a great sub.

    Jason,

So you are not recommending 5BP's (you have mentioned 4BP's in your reply). My space on the Left surround will be little more 1 feet to the side wall and more than 3 feet on the right surround.  Please clarify.

     Thanks again.

Right usually with a rear placement with the 5DBs you end up going with the bipole mode since the dipole mode is designed for side placement and then you lose the advantage that they have over the 4BPs.

Thanks for being patient with my questions.

If I put up the 5db's on the side walls (next to the sofa, please see my room plan), would that work?

Sure thing, that's what I'm here for, but it doesn't look to me like you have a side wall to the left of the couch, correct?

I do have 2 side walls on both ends that run perpendicular to the back wall (each wall is 4.5 feet wide). On the left it is closer to the couch, on the right it is little farther. Pls see new diagram

Gotcha, and I meant right of the couch in my last post, lol.

Anyway, yes if you can place them directly to your sides then the 5DBs will be worth it.

Also I forgot to mention if you can move the sub up to the front of the room then I recommend it as having it right next to you can cause the sound from it to be localize-able.

Re: Gurus...need help to make decision...

Thanks. Moving the sub to the front of the room will be a problem. I have a big TV stand and I moved the sub to the back of the room so that I have some space for the towers.

If sub has to be moved to the front, I have rethink the whole idea. I was under the impression, sub can be placed anywhere because low level signals cannot be identified where it comes. Please correct me if I am wrong and also provide me your input.

It's true the freqs produced from a sub are in general not localize-able but when the sub is right next to you sometimes it can overwhelm the other speakers.

So if the front of the room is out there's what is called the rule of thirds and so you can place the sub either one third of the way back from the front wall or two thirds of the way back, both of those positions would be preferable to the back corner.

Re: Gurus...need help to make decision...

then I have to settle for B's instead of towers. I don't have room to put towers and sub in the front. What will I be losing if I switch from towers to B's?

Re: Gurus...need help to make decision...

So we're talking about wall mounting them?

If that's the case then you'll likely want to go with the 5Bs as the 6Bs sound best on a stand, and the 6B on a stand will take up just as much room as the 5Ts.

So comparing the 5Bs to the 5Ts, you get less bass extension as the 5Bs go down to about 75 Hz compared with the 5Ts that go down to 45, however since you have a sub that shouldn't be too much of an issue. The midrange is fuller for the 5Ts as well and that difference will be most noticeable for music.  The 5Ts are also quite a bit more sensitive than the 5Bs so they'll require less power, but since your receiver is rated at 130 wpc you shouldn't have any problem driving the 5Bs.

Re: Gurus...need help to make decision...

    Jason,

I was thinking of placing them B's on the TV stand (my TV stand is long and big). If I wall mount them it will be behind the TV (as TV is not on the wall). Will that be a problem? Also hanging them on the wall will not point the sound waves to the listening position (45 deg angle) right?
