    Disappointed with Aperion

I posted my initial problem a little over two months ago =  avr-435 cutting out.  Brian, thank you for your input.  I triple checked my initial install.  It came up flawless.  My problem happens at high volume for a length of 5 min. in 2 channel mode. (Receiver shuts off) I spoke with aperion first about the problem because of their superb custumer support!  Didn't really get anything clear other than maybe talking to Harman Kardon about the problem.

Spoke to Harman Kardon rep that seemed to have a high level of knowledge.  First thing he asked, "what type of speaker do you have"  I pointed him to aperion's web site.  First thing he saw was that my aperion 522-LR are a 4 ohm speaker.  He feels that the receiver can handle the 4 ohms but not at high volume for long periods of time.  The avr-435 is putting its self into an autoprotect mode, shuts down.

That was about the worst news I've ever heard.  I couldn't believe that my receiver doesn't work well with my speakers when my speaker maker sells and recomends the receiver that I bought.  I didn't really know much about the differnce between a 4 ohm speaker and an 8 ohm speaker coming into this, but now have gained much knowledge.  Bottom line is that I was down right disapointed in aperion.  I and everyone who participates in this forum has a love for aperion speakers.  They sound great, they look great and are built great.  I just wish I would have been aware of such a problem before spending a large amount money.

I started off in home audio looking at buying a bose system like we are all brainwashed to do.  Thankfully I found sites like this and audioaholics.com to point me in the right direction.  It's just discourging to spend good money on something that doesn't work.

Sollution:  What do I do now?  Anything I do will end up with me spending even more money on something my wife really didn't approve of in the first place.

When I trace my foot steps back I remember the specks saying   6-8 ohms impedence.  Now I know this can lend itself into a very lengthy topic of specks and frequencies but all I'm interested is bottom line.  That bottom line is a product that works.  Most of the specks I found on the 522-LR show it being a 6-8 ohm speaker.

Here is what Ben Fowler says the speakers are in a post called Confused About Sensitivity Numbers

The Diaural Speakers (522D-LR) had a rated nominal impedence of 6  ohms, but they were actually closer to 4-5, so that's why you're not seeing a bump in the sensitivy.

    What to do,

The trade up program would be nice to upgrade to the 532-LR but fine print says:

  • New speaker must be of higher cash value than older model. If new speaker is a revision of a previous model and has the same price as the previous model, it is not an eligible trade-up.

    Open to all suggestions

    RE: Disappointed with Aperion

It seems like a problem with the receiver to me.....if HK feels like "their receiver can handle 4 ohms but not for long periods of time" Have you tried a different receiver? One call shows the AVR listed as 8 ohm. So you really only have 2 options. GEt a receiver that has 4 ohm (my Yamaha 657 allows you to select either) or you can upgrade to 6-8 ohm speakers like the 532's you were looking at. Call Aperion it seems like given the situation they will take care of you. Oh by the way....if they do please post back here and let everyone know....threads like this might turn people away for Aperion and these guys work pretty hard to make good speakers. I would hate to see them lose business if this all turns out for you. Best wishes.

    RE: Disappointed with Aperion

I'll make this quick post to answer a few of your questions and points.  1.  I did not try a new receiver, but I did try some new speakers.  I hauled from my basement my old Optimus 15" woofer and cone tweeter monsters.  These speakers are 8 OHM.  I cranked the optimus left and right with my aperion sub for 25 min with no problem.  HK rep told me to try this.

Nathan, your receiver looks nice on paper.  I would check out some forum posts on " The dreaded ohm selector switch " at audioholics.com.

I would love to upgrade to the 532's.  2 1/2 months after I bought my system, aperion came out with the upgraded crossover.  Bummer, if I would have only waited 2 1/2 months longer or maybe have been informed of this coming upgrade!  The fine print of the trade up program says:

New speaker must be of higher cash value than older model. If new speaker is a revision of a previous model and has the same price as the previous model, it is not an eligible trade-up.

I have had the best customer service, support and experience with aperion.  I can't say enough good about the speakers and company.  I may be the first to post a negative comment on this forum.  They are great speakers.  Just put yourself in my shoes.  Nathan we pretty much have the same system.  Your giddy with the arrival of your new beautiful aperion speakers, you hook it all up and sounds awesome.   Then 5 min of high volume goes by and the whole thing just shuts down.  After months of research you find out that your receiver that was recommended by the people who make your speakers, DOESN'T WORK!!!

Just disappointed is all I'm saying.  I am not trying to discourage anyone from aperion.  They are awesome.  This problem should not happen to anyone else in the future.  The only speakers on the site are the 532's

I will keep everyone informed of how it turns out.

    RE: Disappointed with Aperion

Basically you are overload the HK. Aperion did recommend a great receiver for HT use not for extended play at ear popping levels. If you wanted Rock Concert levels you should go with a dedicated power amp instead of a multipurpose receiver.

The difference between 8ohn and 4ohm impedence levels is the 4ohm speakers put twice the load on the receiver causing twice current the draw. This is fine at what 90% of the folks will call normal listening levels. I admin when I was in college my normal listening level was loud enough to get the cops called on me weekly. I was known as "The Racket Next Door" downtown. Anyways back to your issue. to alleviate the problem you would need to lighten the load on your receiver if you are going to run at 90% volume or purchase a new receiver.

    1) Lighten the load could be as simple as putting in a power resiter in series with your current load to increase the impedence (not reccommended).

    2) Get a receiver (preferable a poweramp) rated at high power at 4ohm continuous.

As the impedence approaches 0ohm you are effectively bringing the receiver closer and closer to a dead short. So running your receiver at high volume causes it to work harder while causing it to overload itself.
