    Master and Commander

Has anyone seen this on DVD yet? I just picked it up this morning on the recommendation of some video-philes. The video and audio is supposed to be awesome. I'll let you know what I think in a bit...

I don't get all the raves and award nominations this film got?  I just couldn't get into it.  I felt removed from the movie the whole time, and it just seemed to drag on without much direction at points.  As for the video and audio, I didn't watch it on an HT, so I can't comment.

The movie was okay and I enjoyed it, but it could have been better.  As for sound, it had some really good moments in gun battle and storms and the use of the surround speakers really came into play many times. From a audio sound point - it was pretty good and may have made the movie more enjoyable than it would have been otherwise.

I agree that the story was not very good, but I thought the audio was exellent. Whenever the camera is below deck you can hear the boat creaking all around you and people above deck running around. The cannon shots had perfect timing when it went from the front to the surrounds and the bass shook the house. It is also in DTS. I would also recomend the soundtrack, it has some violin pieces that sound amazing.

I too thought the story was a bit lacking, but was captivated by the audio.  The opening sequence when the French frigate known as the Acheron attacks the HMS Surprise really got me involved early.  My other experiences pretty much involved anticipating the next battle sequence or open ocean audio environment.

I have to agree with you guys. I watched the DTS 5.1 soundtrack at home recently, (with the tower speakers and VAC center), and was quite riveted by the sound. There's lots of swirly ocean effects and boat creaks, and then when those bombs let loose...they're very deep and tight. Loved that. The violin-based soundtrack is awesome too.

The picture quality seems very true and well-defined. The story was okay, and I did like it, but it's one of those things where the book just makes more sense. I think it got too much credit for what it actually was. But it still was a fun movie.
