Reversed polarity on a new 533-VAC?

Reversed polarity on a new 533-VAC?

I received my 533-VAC today, which replaced a 422-C. My receiver (Yamaha HTR-5990) has an automatic speaker configuration feature, which thinks that the phase of my connection to 533-VAC is reversed. In other words, I have to connect the + of the receiver to the - of the 533-VAC, and vice versa, to make the receiver believe that the phase is right. The receiver didn't have an issue with the 422-C. Is it possible that the 533-VAC I got today has been wired wrong internally? The Yamaha documentation also warns that sometimes the auto configuration feature could get the phase wrong. So, what do I do now? Believe the speaker or the receiver? Thanks

My Denon 3806 reports the same phase error.  I would also like to know what causes this anomaly.  Truth be told, I can hear no difference in the speaker regardless of the polarity.

Make that three of us: I, too, have the Denon 3806, whose auto-setup also reports reversed polarity for my 533-VAC. But since this happens with the Yamaha as well, it seems it must be the speaker and not the receiver. Anyone from Aperion care to address this?

RE: Reversed polarity on a new 533-VAC?

All...I experienced the same thing with my Yamaha RX-V2600 receiver...when I ran the auto set up feature with the 532 center channel, the Yamaha said the wiring was correct....when I got the new 533VAC, the Yamaha thought the wiring was reversed....I could hear no difference either way, and SPL levels proved to be identical....I spoke with Mike Hopkins at Aperion yesterday (via e-mail) and he explained that since one of the 5.5 in drivers is passive, it is wired out of phase intentionally in order for the 4" driver to respond properly (I think I'm explaining this correctly) ...it is a known issue with receivers like we have....bottom line, wire the speaker normally and ignore what your receiver thinks...John

    Hey Dennis...

Since you also have the 3606 I would like to ask you a question, or twenty.  I am using the front PT's w/o a sub and I am curious (if you have the same setup) how you are getting around the no-sub setup under Audyssey?  If I use Audyssey, and then look at the EQ for the front L/R channels, there is absolutely no gain under 125Hz.  Is there a trick to it?

Sorry, Steve, I use 632s in front with an S-8 sub and four 422s as surrounds in a 7.1 system in a modest-sized room (13' x 15'), so Audyssey reads all seven locations. Does Audyssey want to set your PTs to "small"? And, if so, have you set them to large in the manual entry menu? You can do this, of course, but I'm not sure the 3806 will accept these under their settings (which, in your case, might mean nothing more than the little green light on the console will register red). I'd think that if you were running EQ without a sub, the program would recognize that and automatically set your speakers (at least your fronts) to large. In any event, you can go into the on-screen manual set-up and set your fronts as low as you need (about 30Hz for the PTs?). My understanding is that Audyssey will retain all the other settings (distance, db, etc.), even if it shows a red light when you select Audyssey in the EQ menu.

This just saved me checking out all the wires I just ran through the walls.  My yamaha reported out of phased and I thought I miss wired the wall panels.

RE: Reversed polarity on a new 533-VAC?

Dennis... thx for the response, I appreciate it.

Audyssey reports my 533-PT's as large, the 533-VAC as small, and the 632-LR's as big.  At this time I use the manual EQ to get the sound I desire because the Audyssey does not give any bottom at all.  I guess I will continue to read Introduction to Rocket Science, also known as the Denon 3806 User Manual, and see if I can uncover the secret button presses and tongue orientation that will give my Aperion's the life they deserve.

RE: Reversed polarity on a new 533-VAC?

    Hey Guys,

I also have a Denon 3806 which showed the polarity on the 533-VAC reversed in auto-setup. If you look at the owners manual on page 13 it says that for some speakers this may be displayed even though the speaker is properly connected. With this being the case you can skip this error message.

RE: Reversed polarity on a new 533-VAC?

Mike's right. For some more detail on this issue, here's our response from our acoustic engineer, Ken Humphreys:

A few manufacturers (such as Yamaha, Denon, HK, to name a few) are starting to include a "phase tester" with their receivers.  Although we applaud their effort to help you set up your home theater speakers correctly, these devices are a bad idea since they can result in mis-wiring.

How can phase testers result in mis-wiring?  Speakers should have their woofer wired "in-phase", but the other drivers may be wired correctly when they're "out of phase".  This is because the proper phasing of these drivers needs to account for the phase shift that naturally occurs from crossover effects, the inherent characteristics of the drivers and the relative positions of the driver's acoustical centers.  In many such cases the phase tester will erroneously report that your speaker is "out of phase".

Our 533-VACC, like many 3-ways, is one of these speakers.

Hope that helps explain the situation!
