Which way to go? Need help

I was in the market for a new subwoofer, but now have moved onto the possiblitly of getting some new front speakers on top of that.

The 533-PT seemed like a pefect choice with the built in subwoofers to solve both my problems. Though I might listen to music more than movies, so then the 633-T seems like the better choice for that, then an additional sub possibly needed for movies and such.

I've read that if you get a sub with the 633-T to make sure to choose the S-10 10" because the lower S8-APR 8" won't do much over what the 633-T already does with it's 6.5" woofers. Then I hear people say that it will be more difficult to blend a subwoofer and 633-T togethor compared to the 533-PT being all in one.

Right now my setup is a simple one, put togethor from hand-me-downs and such.

My front speakers: Cambridge Soundworks with the 2 woofer boxes. The woofers don't do much that I can tell, almost no base without the sub.

Center and rear speakers: Old old BIC America Venturi V52s get the job done, probably not too well for the center though.

Subwoofer: A 5 year old KLH I got at Costco for $99. Never really happy with it, as a kid I was, being able to shake the room, but it's too boomy and bellowy for me, never can get it to sound just right. I like the bass I get from good headphones or even my car speakers. I need something that's tighter, yet still strong at the same time when needed. Here's some info on that sub: http://www.epinions.com/613319_KLH_Audio_10_Powered_Subwoofer_ASW10_120/display_~reviewsMy

Reciever: Panasonic SA-HE200. Here's some info on it: http://www.epinions.com/Panasonic_SA_HE200S_Home_Theater_Receiver_silver___Receiver_SAHE200S/display_~reviews

My living room is 20 feet wide and 13 feet deep. My system and seating is along the longer half, so I sit about 11-12 feet away from the speakers with a wall right behind me. A pic of the front: http://premium1.uploadit.org/TimothyB/livingroom.jpg

So now, what would be the best choice?

    533PT or

    633-T with a sub, possibly the S-10 ($300 over the 533PT)

For my size room, and with music playing 75% of the time, which would be better?

Maybe to save money I should get a sub elsewhere so my total cost with the 633-T is around the same as the 533PTs. I hear the JBL E250P gets good ratings and that's $250 at J&R ( it's being clearenced everywhere). I won't post a link or info on that since I don't want to advertise, but would the S-10 be a much better overall choice and solve my complaints with my current sub? Maybe the money I save on the JBL could be put towards the center 533-VAC when it's released.

Oh, I almost forgot. There is that size difference too with the 533 and 633. From the pic of my living room it would matter much with that deep tv case I have, but sometime in the future I plan to get a 50" HD projection DLP. Would the 633-T look too overwhelming and deep next to those thinner DLP projection tvs? Anyone have experience like that yet?

Also, what's the timeline for the 533-VAC?

Note to others, post in Internet Explorer, using Fire Fox Mozilla I lost all my paragraph returns once posted and couldn't edit the post, I didn't even get the normal image, font, link and other options until in IE.

RE: Which way to go? Need help

    Here is my two cents....

I have never heard the 633's but what from I read there are subtle differences that a critical listener would definatly hear, but from your setup and what you previously owned, I'm not sure you would hear much difference between the 633's and a sub or the 533-PT's.  No disrespect intended, either of these two speakers will not even be comparable to what you have now.

Personally, for your space, I would go with the 533D-PT's.  You eliminate a few things.  The subwoofer, I have noticed a great improvement in the bass response in my system going from an electronic x-over sat/sub system to a full range tower system with two subwoofers.  Now, this may not apply to the 633's and the 10 or 12' sub if you have the right pre/reciever and room acoustics, but in my experience, a passive crossover is better for most entry level systems (these systems are entry level, but the sound quality from them is outstanding for the dollar value.)  Plus, your room isn't big enough to need that kind of SPL, unless unrelenting 25 Hz bass is your desire.  The 533D-PT's will absolutly crank out 30 Hz to an amazing level, which it definatly good enough for most smaller spaces like yours, and mine.

I do think that the 633's would dominate your space, especially with the required subwoofer.

    Flame on,

    Matt

Thanks for your reply. You may have swayed me to the 533-PT, if I'm not totally happy with them there's the 30 day period. And overall, like you said, Two 533-PTs would look better in my place than the larger 633-T with sub. But I'll still think it over a little more until I get more input.

Brian, Matt has a lot of good points, and I would second his choice for the 533-PT's.

Good Luck and keep us posted.

RE: Which way to go? Need help

I plan to go with the 533-Pt's, thanks for your comments.

Now comes the hard decision, should I go with the cherry or the high gloss black. I know the cherry won't match my more natural tv stand, but I don't plan to have it forever. As soon as I figure this out I'll order.

    Decisions, decisions....

Both are great!  I was never a fan of plain black speakers, but my house is all dark woods so the cherry wasn't an option.  The piano black finish is beautiful in person.  The web photography doesn't even do it justice.  Good luck with your decision and keep us posted once you get some listening time in with them!

RE: Which way to go? Need help

Brian, I saw 522-PT (now 533-PT) in black. The finish is outstanding. I'd prefer high gloss back over cherry, but again, it's a personal taste.

RE: Which way to go? Need help

    Placed my order today:

    533-PT x2
    532-LR x2
    533-VAC

And with you guys keeping count, that's on'y 5 total, or do I get to count the towers as 2 with the built in subs

The PT's won't be shipping for a while but they'll ship the bookshelf and center speakers Monday, so I'll atleast get to test them out while I wait for the towers. Ben also said the 30 day trial won't start until all the speakers are sent.

Oh, I also chose cherry. Black would be fine, but I'd never know for sure how I'd take the gloss look until I could see it in person, so the wood is the safer bet.

As the speakers arrive I'll post 5 megapixel images.

Brian,    what camera did you use to take picture of your living room?   I got myself a Canon A95 5megapixel but it was a lemon so I sent it to canon for repair and been waiting for almost a month now. It was under exposing what the tech support says.

Your pisture clarity is  awsome, that's what Im looking for, thanks

RE: Which way to go? Need help

I have the Sony Cybershot DSC-P92. When I bought it $50 more could have got me a better, smaller version then.

What really helped me with purchasing a camera was this guy's site:

    http://www.steves-digicams.com/hardware_reviews.html

He seemed to have reviews on every camera then, not sure now. Best part was in each review he'll take photos of the same locations and uploads the raw jpegs so you can compare their quality with other cameras. Photos like of a harbor of sailboats that has many sharp white lines against a blue sky, brick buidlings and such. To see the sample photos, when in a review use the white menu on the top left to get to them.

RE: Which way to go? Need help

    Dang Dang Dang

Finally after 2 months my Power Towers shipped, actually 10 days earlier than expected, so I was ecstatic, especially since the date for delivery would make it for Friday, just in time for the weekend.

It headed out for delivery today, 26th, left at 3:52AM with a time-frame as late as 7pm for delivery. Sadly, nothing arrived after 7pm. By 9pm UPS tracking showed it rescheduled for the 29th as they won't deliver on the weekend.

I'm so upset right now, I was looking forward to this for 2 months , just as it was in reach now I have to wait another 3 days to be delivered because UPS failed on their supposed guaranteed on time delivery. So this means it will be 4 days by the time I get to use them, maybe longer if this time I have no one around to accept them. Wish I never used my comp time to wait for nothing.

So much for a fun weekend

UPS has that guarantee, does that mean Aperion will get their shipping costs back because UPS failed?
