    Bipole/Dipole positioning

Ok, I finally have my speakers and now I need to place them. I have 2 of the 534SS for rear sound and my seating is about 16 feet away in the center of the room. One problem, now I need to mount the 534SS in the rear of the room but towards the corner of the room.

Should I put them in the actual corner and angle them towards the listening area (have null point to seating)?

Or, should I put them very close to the corner of the room in the back and angle them towards each other?

Or, should I put them close to the corner and angle them to point to the front of the room?

I was thinking number one would be best because I don't want the sound from one side of the speaker to bounce off the wall before the other side of the speaker hits a wall.

    Please help.

    RE: Bipole/Dipole positioning

Are you using the 534SS speakers as L/R Surround (like for a 5.1 setup) or as L/R "Rear" Surround (as in a 7.1 system)? If you're setting up a 5.1 system the L/R Surround speakers would more typically be mounted on the side walls (above ear level) directly to the left and right of the seating area.

But no matter if you but them to the sides or in the rear, if you're planning to use them in dipole mode I would keep them flush against a wall and well away from any corners.

If you're using them as Rear Surround in a 7.1 setup, it's more common to use them in bipole mode. But in any case try them in different posistions, and in both dipole and bipole mode, to see what sounds best to you.

I'm using a pair of 534SS speakers on the side walls in dipole mode in my current 5.1 setup. These were my first dipole speakers so it's been a bit of a learning experience for me setting them up. It is a pain that you have to make more holes every time you want to play with the posistioning; but I've resigned myself that I may have to sacrifice some wall board to find the best spot.

    Best of luck,

    Rick Moll

    Current 5.1 setup:
    Speakers: Aperion (2) 633-T, (1) 634-VAC, (2) 534-SS
Subwoofer: HSU Research VTF-3 MK 2

    Re: RE: Bipole/Dipole positioning

I'm in a strange situation.  I need to get front Left and Right speakers and it turns out that the speaker jacks for the surround system are closer to the corners that I would like.  On the wall where the tv is, the speakers are about 1-1.5 feet from the corners (Left and right corners) and about 1 foot from the ceiling.  Do you think the 534SS speakers would do well there?  Or would it just be the most horrid thing ever?  Any advice?  I was going to make use of those speaker jacks for an on wall solution or I was going to just go with some floor standing models that sandwich my entertainment media cabinet (about 70 inches long) on the sides.  But I was trying to go without the added equipment/speakers.
OR, should I go BOTH the floor standing for big sound and the wall mounts (even though they are close to the corners) for added surround??  I don't know and am confused about this setup and how many speakers I need etc.  The room isn't all that big either... 12x19 and the 'front' is the 19 foot side...

    Any advice?

    Re: Bipole/Dipole positioning

    Melissa,

I would experiment with speaker ploacement. Since you must mix what sounds good with what looks good, you may want to try various speaker placements on a temporary basis. I have an S-10 Sub, 2 534-SS and 2 422'S. I have changed their position  4 times so far. I have 2 532'S coming in a few days. This will probably require a different audio calibration setup.

You can mount the 534'SS on a wall, or like I am doing, place them on stands.

The 534-SS are impressive speakers. I currently am using the 534-SS as front main in Bi-Pole. I am getting close to what I want.

I use the Aperion SPL meter to test my setup. Each change requires a revised setting  at the sound source.

    It should be you're choice.

    Jack,

If you don't mind me asking, what stands are you using with those 534's? I'm thinking about moving mine to the side of the room and getting two 532s for the rear. Thanks.

    Re: Bipole/Dipole positioning

    Liemen,

I bought the stands from the link below.

    http://www.standsandmounts.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=204

My stands are solid cherry from Wood Technology  #FGC-26 and match the 534’s cherry finish well. I first used the 534’s as fronts on Speaker A until I received my 632’s, which now are on those stands.

I would suggest wall mounting once you have decided on the location if that is possible in your situation.

There are a lot of stands out there but the link above will give you a lot of choices.

You may also want to test the speaker height by placing them on temporary make shift stands. 26” stands may be too low for surround.

    Jack,

Thanks for the link. One more thing. How did you mount the speaker on the stand? Did you use any type of adhesive or did you just let them sit on the rubber pads? Those rubber pads look kinda dangerous to me. Tongue Tied Anyways, thanks again for your help.

    Re: Bipole/Dipole positioning

    Mike,

I did not use the little pads. I placed a 1/8th inch thick sheet of rubber on the top plate and then the speaker on top of the rubber, which made for a non-slip surface.

I think that some people use Velcro or double back tape but some of that tape is so good that it may just peel off the finish if you decide on wall mounting.

I have no children or pets, so that may be a consideration.
