    534-SS positions

Due to my room layout (and WAF) I cannot place the two 534-SS surrounds on the sides in my 5.1 setup, instead they are going on the back wall about 2 feet behind and 2 ft above the seating position.  They are facing forward and positioned just outside the sides of the sofa (primary listening position) about 8' apart.

I know that the 534's come as matched L/R pairs and the recommended placement is on the sides.  This is clear but I've never seen any comments regarding bi/di pole setup when the surrounds are located on the back wall instead of the sides.  I have seen some recommendations for a 7.1 system where bi/di poles are used as the rear surrounds (in addition to another pair for the primary surrounds) and the general recommendation seems to be to reverse the speaker positions on the back wall and put the left on the right and visa versa.

What is the best option for a 5.1 system?  Keep the left on the left or switch them?  Thanks

    KJ,

The Aperion manual shows suggested mounting of either side placement or rear placement as being acceptable.

If your receiver has both surround and rear surround you can also experiment with which sound you like best.

The L/R placement of the 534’s is up to you. I have mine configured so the Bi/Di switch behind the grill is easily accessible. You may want to place the speakers so the switch is pointed away from the couch on each side.

Once you get these things mounted you may not want to hassle with swapping positions since you are trying to line up the mounting slots blind. Make sure you are level with the anchors and the spacing is correct to within 1/16th inch or less. If the center for the anchor is correct but the angle is off you may not be able to engage both mounting slots.

    Trust me, I know.

    Re: 534-SS positions

Thanks Jack, that's what I was thinking.  In the 7.1 system most of the discussion regarding swapping the rears was in regard to putting them in the correct phase to work with the side surrounds and I don't see what real relevance in my setup.

Speaking of mounting, the speaker wire connections appear to be recessed a bit on the back.  Is there sufficient depth to use banana plugs or will I need to use either a direct connection or spades?  I've pre-wired my walls and have banana plugs but since the back barrel of the plug is so long I doubt it'll fit behind a flush mounted speaker unless that hole is deeper than it looks in the pics.
