questions on newly purchased speakers...and old ones

Just bought  2 5B's, the 5C and a 10 sub. The 4B's are out of stock so will have to get them later. quick question on my setup....will I be able to get the full movie soundtracks without a complete 5.1 system in place? I have an Onkyo 805 reciever that is waiting on the new speakers before I hook it up. (also moving in 2 weeks so nothing will be hooked up untill the move) My family room is 13 x 19.5' i'm assuming from what i've read so far that this system should handle this space well? I'm very exited to get this system set up in the new house!

In an unrelated topic, I have a set of old Morel MLP-403 speakers. They are 3-ways and fairly large speakers, shorter than full towers, larger than normal bookshelf speakers. 1 of the speakers is broke. If I had to guess, I would say the midrange is busted. It works at very low volume start turning it up and get a hiss, more or less. Any ideas on how to confirm if it's a driver or circuitry problem? Would love to have the old set in my sunroom hooked up to my old reciever.I realize this is not a speaker building site, just thought you guys might be able to point me in a good direction for researching this or to comment if it would even be worth the trouble. I live in West Virginia so no electronics shops near to take it to

thanks in advance for any info/comments provided

Hey Joe welcome to the forum!  (Although the other JoeZ may take issue with your handle.  Wink)

Yes, you can use the front three speakers and the sub with your receiver in surround mode, just make sure to select "None" for the surrounds in the speaker configuration menu of the 805.

As for the Morels, hmmmm, not sure, typically a hiss would be some sort of interference, but if only one speaker is producing it then it's not very likely.  You can test the woofers by pushing gently on the center of them (as long as they have inverted dust caps like our speakers) which will cut out their output.  If by pushing on the midrange driver you eliminate the hiss then you know it's coming from that woofer.  If that is the case you might want to contact Morel to see if they have replacements and installing a new driver is fairly simple if you are comfortable with using a soldering iron.  If it is indeed a crossover problem then that's probably going to be fairly difficult to repair on your own, and may even be impossible for a repair shop if the Morels use any proprietary parts.
