    new owner : 5.1 w/ 5's all around + 10D : 17x15 room

Just ordered a 5.1 system with 5B/5C and 10D for my 17x15 room.  Think it'll sound ok?

I debated long about getting the 12D for the extra lowend, but decided the 10D would be good enough bang for the buck and went with bigger rears instead (I originally was going for 4Bs in the rear until someone convinced me that many movies really put some sound out the back)...

Also, do they just send the FREE SPL meter automatically, or should I have added it manually to my cart?   That was a little unclear/unspecified in the product info...

My friend...you are in for an eargasm.  I just got my system a couple of weeks ago and am LOVING it!  You will get the free SPL meter as well as gloves and a polish rag to handle/clean your speakers without having to add them to the cart.  Also, for that size room, see what the 10" sounds like but you may want to upgrade to the larger one to push the low end.
Do or do not, there is no try.

    Re: new owner : 5.1 w/ 5's all around + 10D : 17x15 room

Welcome to the family. Our systems are identical, except I did go for the 12D. You will be very pleased, I guarantee!

You might want to call about the sound meter. You are entitled to one, but I did not get mine until I called them. I don't know if it is automatic or not. I know others had to call them, based on posts here, and on AVS forums. Regardless, you do have one coming.

Let us know how you like your system!

    Re: new owner : 5.1 w/ 5's all around + 10D : 17x15 room

Greetings and welcome to the club.  Got to be pretty exciting waiting for the fed ex man to show up.

I've got the 5B's/5C and 4B combo and am currently saving up to get some towers.  Great stuff.  If you want the most out of these 5B's you gotta give some clean power, so what AVR are you using?  I definately recommend watching a blueray movie with uncompressed audio on these babies.  You will be blown away, litteraly.  And Multichannel music should rock on these babies!

Have fun and visit us often.

    Re: new owner : 5.1 w/ 5's all around + 10D : 17x15 room

    subatomic,

My room is roughly 20x20 with a cathedral ceiling going from about 10 feet to 16 feet and I'm using the 10D; it's got plenty of bass for my room so I doubt you'll have a problem. I have 5Ts in the front and 5B surrounds.  Awesome.  I got my meter in the same shipment as the speakers; I never had to add it to the cart. If it doesn't show up, call them and I'm sure they'll take care of the glitch for you.

Enjoy - let us know how it works out.

    Re: new owner : 5.1 w/ 5's all around + 10D : 17x15 room

The AVR is a Yamaha RXV-1700...

I debated getting 7.1 speakers, but figured if 5.1 doesn't cut it, another 2 are very easy to add on later...

Does anyone run 7.1 here?   Got any experiences with 5.1 vs 7.1?

    Re: new owner : 5.1 w/ 5's all around + 10D : 17x15 room

I may be in the minority in this thread, but I would MUCH rather have the more capable sub (mostly for deep bass) as opposed to larger surrounds.  Surrounds for home theater is mostly just effects and as such, the speakers do not need to be quite as capable as the fronts.  A killer sub, however, really pushes your whole theater to another level when watching action movies and such.

    Re: new owner : 5.1 w/ 5's all around + 10D : 17x15 room

I agree with you.  The reason I went with the 10 (and maybe I'm wrong), but I got the impression that the 10" would be very capable.  and for the room size, just as capable as the 12 (if maybe not quite as low into the elephant hearing range)...

so my rationale for the smaller sub w/ bigger rears, was that the power of the 12" could be wasted on my small room, while the power of bigger surrounds would be appreciated.  afterall, there's many many reviews on the 8D saying how great that is, with no mention of "gee i wish i had a bigger sub".  all we get are words like "astounding" and "thunderous".  hmm... ok...  so......    so, I guess we can blame confusing product literature (or maybe the 10D really will be that awesome. :) )

I'll see when it ships of course.   I may want to exchange sub and rears for smallers rears and bigger sub.   I hope not...  don't want to hassle with the returns. :)

the subs are on back order until september, so i'll be playing with the 5 speakers alone for a bit...

    Re: new owner : 5.1 w/ 5's all around + 10D : 17x15 room

    Hey guys,

Everyone who orders a full 5.1 system gets an SPL meter automatically, you don't have to call us, unless you have separate orders that add up to a 5.1 system then it's a good idea to contact us and let us know that you need a meter.  If you did order a 5.1 system in one order and you didn't get one, then it must have been the one in a million chance that we slipped up and forgot to include so please accept my most humblest apologies.

    Re: new owner : 5.1 w/ 5's all around + 10D : 17x15 room

cool, thanks for the reassurance.    I think I'm covered then.   I was going to piece mine out, but then went with the system configuration to be sure that I got the free SPL...

to reduce confusion, you might add a promo code, or a FREE click box on the order so people can remind you. :)    basically a tag to remind the people packing the system to verify if the order qualifies...

also, i've noticed your website has errors sometimes, like when i update quantities in the cart, and sometimes (not always) when I change colors on the speaker...    stuff I was able to get around, but thought you should know...

Yeah honestly people not getting their SPL meters when they should is very rare, usually I talk to people who just ordered one pair of speakers who think they should be getting it and I would bet they would be the ones clicking on the box, but thanks for the suggestion.

What kind of errors?  If you can give me the specifics I would be happy to forward them to our web administrator.  But yeah I catch little web errors all the time, unfortunately that's the nature of the beast but we try and correct them as quickly as possible.

hey Jason, looks like I can't repro the problem anymore.  Maybe it was fixed.  I'm on linux/firefox 2.x now.   had the problem last night (and several times last week) on windows/firefox 3.0.

    sub woofer questions.

    ok, getting back on topic.

  • so, has anyone heard both the 10D and the 12D, and been able to A/B them?

can you summarize the difference between these?  every review i hear for 8D/10D/12D say each one is great, but the reviews don't really compare them to each other in a way that would help you decide whether the extra $300 is worth it for the 12D...

  • qualitatively, what do I miss with the 10D that the 12D has?  and would I even notice it in a 17x15 room...

with the extra freq response, the sound waves around 20hz are like 17feet long so maybe they'd cancel out or not even work in a room that small (though maybe it'd rattle it... :)  ).   maybe i'm trying to be too smart here with the sound wave math...

  • an unrelated question i had...  does the dual woofers move together or opposing each other?  Just curious. :)

    Hey there,

I think you have indeed discovered a Firefox 3 bug - I can replicate your shopping cart issue.  I can't, however replicate your color problem.  Can you give me more information about how that happened?

    Thank you very much!

  • The 2 woofers are in phase, they got out at the same time and in at the same time.

    Cheers
