    Room Shape Problem

    I'm completely new to home theater, but have had my Aperion Audio speakers for a couple years now. I currently have I think the 5 series center channel and bookshelf speakers, plus the powered 8" sub.

     I just got a HDTV, so I've really gotten interested in home theater, but my problem is the weird shape of my room. I want to have full surround, and to be honest, although I love the sound of the Aperion speakers and have heard nothing better, it really doesn't seem to make a lot of difference what format the audio is played in. I think it should, so I need to fix it.

     So my goal is to find a way to create a 7.1 system even though it's not a rectangle, and the viewing angles are very odd. Can you guys recommend somewhere to read up on that sort of thing?

     Imagine the room as shaped like this:

          S|

    |

    | |

    |T__  |

    TV cuts the corner at the bottom left diagonally, facing the top right where the viewing position is...T is TV, S is seat...I have a feeling I'm going to need to draw it out at some point, but can anyone help?

    Dang, I should have realized I would need pictures. Just digging up anything from work, I found new construction photos that give show a little, as long as you have imagination! :) The TV is kiddy corner on the short wall that isn't really visible, and also the moderate far wall you can see mainly in the non kitchen photo. The long wall with the window, the primary seating area is directly outside the camera shot to the left. The dining room is behind it, so it's really one great room. Do those pictures help? I've had the worst luck with the TV caddy (kiddy?) cornered, both in front speaker placement, center channel placement, you name it. I need to FIX this, because I want some serious sound! :) Oh, and if anyone cares, I've got a Denon AVR-988 powering the speakers and a 52" LCD. Thanks!

    Hmmm, tough room so to speak.  So you have four 5 series bookshelves and a 5 series center?  Are we mounting those bad boys or putting them on stands?

    I don't know about 7.1 in that room, let's try and get a decent 5.1 config. first and go from there.

    Re: Room Shape Problem

    I thought it was a tough room too! :)

     I've got two  5 series bookshelfs on Aperion stands, a center channel that is currently on the very bottom of the shelves (which may not help), and a powered sub next to the shelves. I saw a cool Aperion center channel mount, but since there is a good deal of space behind the tv to the wall, I'm kind of out of luck there too.

    Thanks for any help you can give!

    Have you thought about rearranging the seating and TV placement. It would probably be a lot easier to get 7.1 if the TV was against the far wall (to the right of the window in the picture) and the main viewing seat (your seat of course!) was in front of the TV. Of course I'm just guessing since there is no furniture in the pictures and there is no view of the rear of the room.

    And there's absolutely no chance of putting the TV on the blank wall behind the ceiling fan in your first picture?

    Dang! I was hoping that wouldn't be the solution. The Wife Approval/Acceptance Factor on that type of setup is low, because you walk through that main room to a hallway to the right of the pics. A couch will make that "walkway" a bit cramped and kind of divide the room in to two portions.

    The more I think about it though,  I might just have to push her...Of course, I can't tell her WHY I want to move everything, since I'm already sleeping on the couch for deciding to build an HTPC. :(

    Why not do something like this:

    s=4b surrounds

    sw=subwoofer

    T=aperion towers

    Put the Center on top of the stand

    mount tv on the wall

    My wife loves the setup:

    Yeah Dan's set up recommendation really will be the best, but we don't want to cause any domestic unrest either!  Big Smile

    If she won't go for it, a picture of the back corner of the room we can't see would help out and we can figure out something for you.

    Just tell her Hicks said you had to do that way or else they will charge you the non optimal placement fee!
