    Towers vs Bookshelfs

    Hi all,

I've pretty much made up my mind to go with the 5T's for fronts but want that bit of push that I should not go with the 6B's.

From past experience, I've heard many speakers at my local audio shop. First I start with the bookshelfs. At first they sound great, specially with a sub. Then when I switch to a tower with a sub, there's that extra fullness sound that the bookshelfs are missing. It seems to be common no matter what brand I listen to. Is it true for Aperion? Can someone explain the sound quality differences between Aperion towers and bookshelves?

    Thanks for any replies.

    Good Morning,

While there are pros and cons to both. Theres more bang for your buck with 5t's. But theres a fuller range with the 6b. I think ultimatly both are very nice, and your defining factor is going to be space. The 5/6t's are quite large, and WAF is very small. Wheras the 6b packs a huge punch in a very nice small ish package.

Im sure the Aperion GURUS can give you the technical details on teh difference. Thats my .02

Keep in mind Aperions bookshelves are harder on the equipment because of their lowered sensitivities.  So right out of the gate you are going to get more effortless volume with the towers..Because you are getting two drivers with the towers you are also going to get a more open midrange.  The towers are probably about the same size as the bookshelves on stands, plus you have to include the price of stands in purchasing bookshelves.  My opinion would be to look into the towers if you can afford them.  While the 6B's are some serious bookshelves you would probably need to get serious about getting a nice amp to get them to sing...Not much so with the towers.

From what I hear Aperion really scored with their new towers.  Even their 4T's are greater than their 5B's...I can't wait till I can upgrade to towers.

    My opinion.

Dan and cucore covered it well, I would just say for me it's a bit of a trade off strictly in terms of sound, you will get fuller mids out of the 5Ts but a bit more bass out of the 6Bs.

But in a larger area the 5Ts will readily fill the space much easier both because of the two woofers vs. one plus the higher sensitivity of the 5Ts.

    Re: Towers vs Bookshelfs

I can't speak for Aperion bookshelf's, but my previous fronts were another brand of similar size. After getting the 5T's I noticed allot of sound I was missing without pushing as hard with my receiver's settings. Two active drivers and the design, make them without a doubt ( IMO )better then any small bookshelf I've heard. But the 6B isn't so small.

If I were setting up a 2 channel system or a 2.1 Id go with 5/6B's. But for home theater...the towers are it.

    Just my opinion/preference.

What kind of listening are we talking about here? Mainly home theater, or music/critical music listening? Will these speakers be part of a complete 5.1/7.1 purchase? Giving a bit more information about what type of listening you are going to be doing will help a lot...

Thanks for all the replies thus far.

This system will mostly be used for home theater. We do listen to a bit of Jazz now and then by thats probably about 10% of our overall listening.

On the amp side, I've got a Pioneer 1018 that specs out around 110 watts.

I've got a pretty good HSU sub allready so if I go with the 5T's I would assume the sub would fill in for those frequencies under 80. I'm mostly looking for nice mid's and high's.

For comparison, I currenlty have an old Klipsch bookshelf system. They have great highs but that's about it. I'm looking for a nice smooth sound.

    Re: Towers vs Bookshelfs

Yeah I think everybody's recommendations have been pretty spot on. The 5T's will be pretty darn stellar for jazz music. The mids are really nice...Tons of detail and separation for multi layered instrumentation like jazz, classical, etc...They sound just great there.

For home theater those left and rights play a smaller, more supportive role so the differences there will be noticable, but not vast. For music, I think the 5T's would be a no-brainer, especially if you are looking for a big jump in the "mids" department. The 5T will most certainly give you that and more...
