    Configuration Assistance Appreciated

Hello all.  First, I must say I am sooo glad I found this website; it's truly amazing.  I am building a home theater room and have never purchased hi-end speakers.

    Here is my situation:

The room is approx. 13x19 with vinyl flooring and wood paneling on the walls.  The room will be enclosed, other than the door which is located at the front left.  I will be using a 96'' fixed frame screen located at front of room with a Panasonic PT-AE3000 projector about 6-8' from the screen.  A large sectional couch will be under the projector, possible card table and bar at rear of room.  I have a purchased the Denon 3808 7.1 system.  I will mostly be watching movies and playing Xbox; occasionally listen to internet radio and ipod.

At the moment, I'd like to stay under $2000 and can settle for only 5.1 system.  I would be able to purchase two additional speakers in the future for 7.1 correct?

     Looking for ideas.

Thank you all for your help.

    Re: Configuration Assistance Appreciated

    Greetings,

Yah.  You have a bunch of options for $2000. And that room size is on the small size.  Excellent choice of receiver.  I like the Denon 3800 series as well as the Onkyo 805's for Aperions!

Anyway...Here are two configurations I really think you'd love in that room size:

     Intimus 5B Harmony HD $2049
Great all around Performer. Superb for movies and multichannel music

    4T's, 5B's, 5C, Bravus 10D $2249
If you have got the extra $200 then I would step up to a set of 4T's for the mains.  It's going to give you all the enjoyment as the above but also give you more enjoyment for your two channel music listening.

If those prices are stretching your budget to much then I would suggest:

Swap the 5B surrounds for 4B surrounds.  This shouldn't have much of an affect on your movie lisetning but may not be as nice for multichannel music.  This is going to save you $200 or so.

That's alll i got for yah.

    Best of luck.

    Dan.

    Re: Configuration Assistance Appreciated

I find myself recommending this system often (with slight variances here and there):

    4T's for front L/R's - http://www.aperionaudio.com/product/NEW-Intimus-4T-Tower-Speaker,164,19,404.aspx

    5C center channel - http://www.aperionaudio.com/product/Intimus-5C-Center-Channel-Speaker,109,19,253.aspx

    4B's for surrounds - http://www.aperionaudio.com/product/Intimus-4B-Satellite-Speaker,113,19,261.aspx

    8D subwoofer - http://www.aperionaudio.com/product/Bravus-8D-Dual-8-Powered-Subwoofer,104,19,241.aspx

This system will bring you to $1759. It's a nice price point, and a great performer overall. The 4T's are KILLING it these days. It's unreal...

Like listening to multi channel music a lot? Bump up those surrounds to the 5B's ($1949). Like lots of DEEP bass in a lareger room? Upgrade the subwoofer to the 10D ($2059). As you can see there are some subtle changes you could make based on your listening preferences.

And yes, I realize I basically just wrote up exactly what Dan just said...Just though a second opinion might count for something Wink

    Re: Configuration Assistance Appreciated

And I'll add in a third opinion (or is it the same opinion for the third time?).  My room is almost the exact same size as yours, but has a carpeted floor.  I have the 4T's and 5C upfront, with 5B's as surrounds, and the 10D sub.  I have to say that this system rocks!  The dialogue coming out of the 5C is so crystal clear, and those 4T's sound great!  And of course, the sub makes those explosions so real!  If I were to do it again, i might have put 4B's in the back (I don't listen to much surround music), and used the money to get 5T's instead (for those times I like to crank up the music).  So, as DG said, it all comes down to your listening preferences and how you'll be using the system (music vs movies, etc).  I think with any combination mentioned, you will not go wrong.

    Re: Configuration Assistance Appreciated

Don't forget about the 100% value trade up program to.  You could get the 4T's for now and upgrade to the 5T's within a years time.  They give you 100% value for your 4T's (assuming you didn't smash em up during a wild party) towards your upgrade (you just need to pay shipping costs).  Just the other day I sent my 5B's in for trade up to the 4T's.  Now I have another year to save up for a 5T trade up!

    Re: Configuration Assistance Appreciated

While I think the trade program works for quite a few situations, I am a firm believer in getting what you want up front.

The reason I say this is that for incremental upgrades (4T to 5T, 4B to 5B, etc.), the shipping costs make it almost not worthwhile. In your case Dan, you went from a bookshelf to a tower. I can see that as worthwhile. But to trade in 4Ts for 5Ts, I think shipping will be a doozy.

Just my two cents. Congrats on the 4Ts. WAF here would not go for towers, and had to do the 5Bs all around. Still sounds great though.

    Re: Configuration Assistance Appreciated

I just traded up on my 5Ts and 5Cs.  Aperion handled all of it, determining the costs, sending me the return labels, etc.  I simply have to attach the return labels to the outgoing 5Ts/5C and FedEx will take pick them up when the delivery my new toys.

The 6Ts/6Cs are monsters, so I expected the shipping to be a bit pricey.  For me it wasn't that bad.  Considering I've thoroughly enjoyed my 5 series speakers for almost a year and am now getting brand new speaks a year later, it is well worth the money.

Chat with an Aperion guru, they'll let you know the shipping costs, see if it works for you.

Aperion, you have one year to make a 7 series speaker.  Get friggin' busy.

    Speakers: Aperion 6T, 6C, 5DB, 6IC, Bravus 10Dx2
Monitor: JVC RS20U front projector with Stewart Velux 100" screen
    Receiver: Yamaha RX-V1800
    Blu-ray: Yamaha BD-S2900
    Amplifier: Emotiva UPA-7
    Conditioner: Panamax M5300PM

    Re: Configuration Assistance Appreciated

hmm.  7 series?  how bout bringing back some power towers?  Dual 5" midrande drivers, tweeter and 150 watt 8" driver?  Basically a 5T with a built in 8" sub.  That sounds like fun, no?

+1 for Aperion helping with the shipping.  They set everything up.  Even asked if i wanted to use their Fed Ex account to save money shipping.  So all I had to do was go to my email and print out the labels.  I believe it cost me $70 all together for shipping 5B's out and 4T's back

Thanks for all of your input folks.  I ordered Davey Gravy's recommendation.  Maybe I'll upgrade the sub later.

BTW: What type of speaker wire and connectors do you all recommend?

     Thanks!!

That would be all you need to get a complete 5.1 kit going strong. If you just want the bare neccesities to get your speakers singing, then you need only the speaker wire, and a subwoofer cable.

14 gauge should be more than enough.  http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10239&cs_id=1023902&p_id=2791&seq=1&format=2

However, you can never go wrong with 12 gauge Stick out tongue http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10239&cs_id=1023901&p_id=2789&seq=1&format=2

And of course your subwoofer cable:

Might wanna get some Banana plugs to help with easy connectivity to.

Sorry, Davey.  Just trying to save the dude some money is all.

Just keep in mind that the upgrade policy does not apply to subs. This is why I went with the 12D right from the start.

    Scottimon,

You make a good point that may be overlooked by many about the Sub’s.

Overall, Aperion has a user-friendly approach to buying speakers online.

I have 12 and never sent one back. They all like my 805.

BTW I think you will get the last bar at around 256 posts.

    Re: Configuration Assistance Appreciated

I use 14AWG and my longest run is probably 30 feet (60 feet) total for each rear surround counting both + and – wire. This is about .1782 ohms added resistance for each rear surround. That is about 2 % of the total resistance seen by the amp for that speaker.

I have about 10 foot runs for my front mains so the total added resistance would be about .0594 ohms.

The sonic experience may be diminished if you run 4-ohm speakers instead of 8-ohm speakers using the same wire/cable but with 14AWG you should be good. Most people may not notice the overall effect but you may need to change the AVR’s setup to accommodate 4-ohm speakers.

Why spend money when you really don’t need to.

I still have some Bose AM7’s and they came with 18 AWG cables. Well larger wire would not have improved the sound with those cute little cubes. In fact smaller wire might have been better so it might be harder to hear them and then just use the TV speakers.

    #14 should suffice.
