Thought I would jump in here.
SACD has been, IMHO, dying since it came out. To be sure it's been slowly fizzling out for the last 4 years. It is certainly higher quality than standard CD and, as you noted JonL, is capable of Multichannel (thought SACDs often come in stereo mixes only)

Anyhow, your Yamaha probably has that area on the display panel because Yamaha likely uses the same display for several of their receiver models.

I saw this on another forum and figured it'd be a good discussion here.
Personally, I prefer vinyl for overall sound quality. I also think vinyl has a warmer, more natural feel than CD.
On the other hand, CD is convenient.
