I have a onkyo HT-RC180 that is acting up. I’m hoping I can get onkyo to fix it, which would be ideal but I’m starting to explore other options. When I got the receiver I wanted it to be a bridge to something nicer in the future anyway. Speakers (Aperion 7.1 with 6Ts, 6C, 5DB, 4D, 8D). 1) In my mind I think separates are what I should do next. I don’t have much audio support for that except what the manufactors say that they can build separates better. But my thought is the biggest bennefit it to upgrade pieces that way. 2) I also feel like mono blocks are supposed to be better than multi channel. But it’s probably true it has to do with the individual amp not just whether it’s monoblock or multi. 3) If I get the receiver fixed I want to start by getting amps and use the receiver as a pre/pro for now. I’m probably looking at $1k – $1.5k as my max for the next piece. What options are best out there? Used market better? 4) if the receiver is shot, can I actually use my OPPO BDP-93 as a pre / pro? I pretty much use my system to watch blu-rays and listen to CDs. Thanks in advance for all your advice and information. |

Hi Brian, Thanks for asking. Yes separates will give you much more in the way of processing and power. The Best regards, |

Thanks for the input Matt! I have heard of Outlaw and Emotiva. It seems on the forums out there (audiogon and avs) either people love them or hate them. It seems to me most of the people speaking against those brands own higher priced equipment and often have not heard the amps but have a theoritical or intellectual bias against them. Have you heard the aperion 6Ts on either of these amps and compared them to higher priced alternatives? If I get monoblocks i’m sure i’ll either get outlaw or emotive since those fit my price point. However, another alternative is the Marantz 5-channel or 2-channel amp. Have you heard the 6Ts on the marantz? |

Oh and one other thing i forgot to mention. I got comformation from OPPO that I can output video to my projector and decoded audio (even sources such as HD-Master) through the RCA 7.1 analoug outs using linear PCM. I guess the new OPPO will even allow HDMI in so you can hook up another device to it and let it perform the video processing (of course the BDP-93 can’t do that). So it looks like I might be able to use the OPPO at least temporarily as a “pre / pro” since blu-ray / CDs are currently my only source. |

Thanks Brian! Good to hear that the Oppo will allow some flexibility for your setup. There are plenty of expensive brands out there, but Emotiva, and Outlaw offer decent performance for the money. If this is |

Thanks Matt! I haven’t seen a lot of activity on these forums lately but if any aperion owners has experience with the emotiva mono, outlaw mono or the marantz multi i’d appreciate input. I’m going to go with one of those options as an entry into separates. I just don’t know what’s the best way to go yet. |

Matt (or any other aperion owners out there), have you used / hear / or heard of Crown amps? I started looking at those as well. Some questions specifically for the 6Ts. I think the max power is 300Ws? Can they be bridged? Is it a bad idea to use an amp that has 400Ws+ if the speaker is rates at 300…or is it atcually better to have the reserve power? Thanks again for your help. |

Dont know much of the Crown amps myself but as far as 400 watts connected to a speaker rated for 300 you will be fine u run a higher risk of damaging your speakers by running to little power clipping is what kills them |

Thanks for the comment Kevin. I have read that underpower amps can damage the speakers. I ended up going to Guitar Center and got a couple of the crowns this weekend, a 1500 model (300w 8ohm) and 2000 (375w 8ohm) model (they are both two channel amps). I’m planning to use the 2000 for the left and right front (6T) and bridge the 1500 for the center (6C). I’m waiting for the 2000 model but got the 1500 this weekend ($325 with their current sale). I put it on the 6T and watched several movies and listened to music in 2-channel. They definitely improved the performance of the 6T. It wasn’t quite as much as I expected but we will see how the extra power of the 2000 helps. Unfortunatly the only experience I have is the Onkyo 110w with two channel driven, so I have no idea how this compares to other amps. However compared to the AVR I did notice a benefit in the to not just the fronts but the overall system (7.1) because the AVR didn’t have to power the L/R fronts. Now that I got used to have it sounds with the separates, I’ll hook it back up to the AVR to see how much a difference I notice and report back. I’ll update again once I get the other amp to see how that helps the system. |
