Best Sub for the buck

I've tried many systems in my life and I've found that by far, usually the weakest link in the system is the sub. The 10" Aperion sub is powerful, clear, and a perfect complement to my 5 and 6 series bookshelves. For the price, you won't find a better product. Even much more expensive subs dont give you the rich, deep bass that can fill my medium sized room. Buy it!

Even better than many higher priced subs.

Bang for the buck is not the only thing that describes this sub. It surpasses the quality of many higher priced subs that lack in clarity. Best used with the other Aperion products, I will be sticking with this system for a long, long time.

I've installed this sub with a 533 and four 532's running off a Denon AV-2807. The configurability and crispness of the base enable you to create a deep background for big films and ambitious music. The canons of the 1812 Overture (SACD) makes them sound like they're firing right in my living room.

I love it!

A subwoofer for life

I bought the S-10 back when Aperion was known as Edge Audio in 2001. The system worked flawlessly for 5 years and then I moved. When I hooked up my home theater in the new house the sub didn't work. So I call up Aperion and with no questions asked they said send it in. They called me the same day it arrived and said there was an actual defect in the sub and replaced it, no questions asked.

You don't run across companies like this anymore. They really stand by their warranty. On a side note the sub shakes the house. Its funny that people come over and watch a movie and instantly turn the lights on to see what I have. They may not have ever heard of Aperion but after a good action flick they always want me to write down the website.

I bought this sub to compliment the rest of my Aperion speakers and it didn't disappoint, other than my wife complaining that the house shakes and thinks we're under attack when I watch a movie with explosions in it. I primarily use the speakers for home theater and it was well worth the money.

Incredible bass shaking sound at a reasonable price

I bought this sub to replace my old Velodyne 12" that I had bought a few years ago. I live in a large studio apartment in NYC and wanted a sub that could both have some room shaking bass as well as deliver tight sonic thumps when listening to music, and boy did this sub do the trick.

My main use for my speakers are for use in movies (40%) and playing video games (60%). I rarely listen to music over my system, but sometimes occasionally listen to MP3's to the horror of many audio aficionados out there. The S-10 delivered on all fronts with my listening preferences. Incredibly tight bass when it came to listening to the now orchestral type music being offered by many video games today, as well as loud earth shaking bass from all the action movies I watch, such as 300.

I had not realized before how "boomy" my previous sub sounded before until I was able to listen to the Aperion sub in my setup. This is a sub you definitely have to try out and listen for yourself.

Impressed with how it complements the 5 series system. This sub has a decent power supply and is able to handle a wide range of frequencies without distortion. It is very clean and tight. This sub is perfect for small-medium sized rooms. It produces plenty of nice tight, clean bass. It is equally good with both movies and music. It is a very good looking, well built sub. Definitely would recommend, and as always, Aperion delivered an amazing product for a great price with fantastic customer service.

I must say that although this sub is extremely powerful, it blends in quite nicely with anything you will be listening to. When you focus your ears precisely on the sub, you will discover how much sound it's really pumping. But when you're listening to the music or movie in general, you are more immersed in the experience itself.

That's what really got me - that this sub wasn't the "big thumping box" that most others I have owned were. It knew its place, so to say, in the home theater, and performed beyond anything I could imagine.

By the way, I would watch the volume dial on your receiver; this thing WILL be heard by the neighbors.

When I was putting together a surround sound system I initially went with the S-8. It worked well but I decided to upgrade to the S-10 to see how it would sound. Well, there was no going back. The S-10 gives my family room the deep base that you feel in the theatre. I'm hooked on Aperion and loving it.

You can't stop it. You can only hope to contain it.

So, while I was talking to Matt from Aperion on the phone about my desires for a new home theater system, he waxed prophetic.

Matt was trying to help me put together a system that would provide excellent performance while remaining sensitive to my pocketbook. While he discussed the various factors in choosing between a pair of 533-PT’s with built in subs or using a stand alone subwoofer, I took some delight in telling him that I intended to have both.

He simply said, “You’re really going to like that.”

Yes Matt, I really do.

The 533-PT’s with their 8 inch powered subs provide very tight bass and give a serious punch to the sound.

The S-10 gives you the thundering lows that you want in the most dynamic scenes. But I should point out that the bass is very well defined and is not muddy in the way that some lesser speakers deliver. I have to believe that the included spike mounts help to this end.

When someone at our home asks if they hear thunder, my wife just says, “No. He’s watching a movie in the basement.”

The finish of my high-gloss black speaker is beautiful. The S-10 has a low, wide, and long top surface. It seems to beg to have something set on it. But everyone in my house knows that doing so would be a very, very bad idea.

Like all of my Aperion speakers, I love this thing.

The S-10 subwoofer and my Pioneer VSX-82TXS receiver deliver pure, undistorted bass at all volume levels. While I love rattling the windows with some heavy rock from time to time, the sound from movies and music that comes on suddenly from low levels is equally stunning. As a long time audiophile who has listened to and owned a lot of speakers, the S-10 performance rates up there with the best I have experienced and at a price that most music lovers can afford.

When I bought my speaker system ( 1 522-VAC, 2- 522-LR and 2 422-LR) I considered getting the S-8. I decided on the S-10 because my room is 13 x 23 with vaulted ceilings. The S-10 fills the space with little effort and it sounds great. The quality is excellent and reliability is outstanding. I've been happily listening for over 2 years and have had no problems and no thoughts about upgrading.

Only One Little Problem

Comments:

This sub is beatutifully matched with the cherry finished 533 center and towers. The only problem I've had was small. Actually, it was small and grey. A field mouse found its way into the back of the subwoofer. The fix included a continous sampling of classic metal/ hard rock. In less than a few minutes, my problem was resolved. I mostly listen to more tame music and movies through this system. Now that the speakers are "broken in", I couldn't be more pleased.

This is a great sub. I got the 10" so I can upgrade my surround sound but know that my bass will be good long after. This is the perfect compromise between size, sound, and price. If I ever want more bass, I'll just add a second S-10.

The 3rd floor of my house shakes with the volume up half the way. I'm scared to take it higher than that as some neighbors have mentioned hearing some loud noises at night, thinking it was construction in the neighborhood.

I read reviews on cnet along with many others and this speaker recieved high marks everywhere. Taking into account that this thing is made with 1" HDF, (rather than 1/2" MDF like most other manufacturers) has a gorgeous finish and there was plenty of praise by other owners I thought that $500 was extremely fair, especially considering that they pay for shipping both ways and give an upgrade to you for the difference if the particular speaker you bought isn't enough. Being able to adjust the crossover, gain and phase right on the speaker is nice and easy. This thing will literally SHAKE YOUR HOUSE!!! I must say this speaker is more suited for movies than music but then most subs are, although the sub does handle the music well. I found the Aperion university site to be very informative, someone has put alot of effort into this company and this site. I also love the general sense of humour these guys have.

I also recieved a thank you card in the mail as well as a little cleaning kit for my sub (piano black finish shows all the finger prints) they sent white gloves which was a very nice touch. great follow up Aperion!!

Great sound, beautiful aesthetics

I bought this sub woofer in 2004 to complete my living room home theater system. I chose this speaker (along with 2 Aperion 522D bookshelf speakers) because it had excellent reviews on Arstechnica.com and because it was a local company (Portland, OR) I also bought it because the speakers perfectly matched the cherry wood finish on my built-in entertainment rack. The subwoofer easily fills a medium size room (16' x 24') with powerful low-frequency thumping.

Anyway, about the sound... The bass sounds excellent on all the movies I have watched. I used the amplifier's built in crossover works beautifully with the S-10. In movies that have a lot of low frequency sound the bass keeps up great even at high volumes. I have no doubt that I could apply more power without distortion. The highest I have ever given it was maybe 50% of max input and that rocked the floors and walls while watching "Saving Private Ryan".

I will say that for movies the S-10 is great but sometimes overpowers the higher frequency sounds in music. I mostly listen to pop rock, funk and classic rock and find that I often need to turn the sub down about 25% so as not to be too distracting. Another minor annoyance is that every time I turn on the amplifier I get a fairly loud "THUMP" sound from sub. It is only a little annoying but it sometimes worries me that it will damage the S-10.

I am so happy that I purchased this sub. The absolute best sounding sub that I have owned and it is so good that I find myself using it to listed to music more and more. In the past I only used my sub for movies, but because of the transparent tight, ultra-quick responsive bass that the Intimus S-10 provides I have it on all the time. The beautifully finished cabinet is even appreciated by my wife. Aperion is the best company that I have done business with in the audio industry. I've been an audio/videophile for over 25 years and they do business the right way. What a pleasure.

I heard about Aperion from a friend at work and have had my eye on them for some time. Before purchasing I called several times and talked to the folks at Aperion. I have to say, that they were so very helpful in helping me select speakers and answering all my questions. I couldn't be happier with the speakers or the company itself. This subwoofer replaced a sealed Boston unit. Compared to my last subwoofer, the bass from this is crisp. If you turn it up, you can feel the explosions on DVDs. It did take some adjustment to get it just the way I wanted, but after adjustment, the sound is nothing short of amazing. Highly recommended.

Big Sub, Big Sound

Only had a cheap-o 6" sub before this guy, so I can't really compare it to say that it sounds "tight" or has a "quick response". But I know that it sounds great and, like others have said, it does ROCK da house! And I only have it on the recommended volume which is less than half way! Looks quite menacing too. If your room is pressed for space, beware. It's surprisingly big; approx. 17"h X 13"w X 19"d AND 56 lbs. of heft. But it does deliver a powerful punch.

Superb subwoofer. It has a lot of power. Beautiful natural tone and clarity. Checked it with a sound level meter - it really goes very low, as advertised. The natural finish is out of this world, hard to find this type and quality. I'm considering adding one more to my system.

Musical Sub

Name: sean foret

Comments:

I own the Intimus 633 Cinema HD system along with the S-10 sub.

This sub has great musical ability and, within its operating range, has no issues with boominess, chuffing, or any other discernable distortion. It reproduces all the way down to 25 hz with liitle effort, provided that you are listening at moderate to low levels. After researching many products, I chose the Intimus linup based upon customer reviews and I am extremely pleased with all but the s-10. It simply CAN NOT keep up with the output levels, or the fidelity of the other speakers. If you are in an enclosed room of small to medium size, it may get a respectable boost from room resonances, but anything of a larger room and this sub can't keep up. Kudos to Aperion, however, for a well built and finished product. Although the rest of the Intimus 6 series is stellar in performance, this enthusiast must continue searching for the Select Visceral Sub to match the greatness of the rest of the Intimus 6 series. I am returning the S-10.

While I was selecting a sub for my surround system, my spouse raised concerns about putting an "ugly box" in the room.

This woofer kicks butt for the price. I LOVE bass, but my wife HATES it, so it spends most of it's time turned down too low for me to enjoy it. My wife says even the littlest amount of bass she can feel in her head, where I can't even tell at that volume. When she goes out of town though, I like to let this dog loose & boy can it bark! Thumping bass while listening to music or just great growling LFEs while watching movies, like "Saving Private Ryan." This thing rocks! Too bad I can't let it out of it's cage all that often :(

Blown Away!!!

I have never written a product review for anything I bought except for this one because I was so impressed with the service and quality of the Intimus S-10. First, the packaging is made of a very high quality foam and not the cheapie styrofoams that others use. The sub itself was wrapped in a very nice double layered velvet which is a class in itself. The subwoofer was built superbly(piano black gloss finish) and it was so heavy that my wife could barely lift it(for me another sign of good quality). I finally hooked it up to my old Yamaha receiver(5.1 system) using Monster M1000 sub cable with Y connector and played Hotel California (Hell Freezes Over DVD) and the ceiling tiles on the basement almost fell off. Next I played Letters from Iwo Jima DVD and during the bombing run the bass was so realistic that you almost actually feel that you are there. It was so nice I don't even have to make an excuse to my wife for buying this subwoofer(the best part) because she was also very impressed with the sound. And all of this was before the recommended break-in period. The delivery was also fast because I received the sub 4 days after I ordered it and the staff communication(e-mails) was excellent. I was so happy with this purchase that I will gladly recommend this to everybody considering the service, the quality and the price. Excellent job for this special bunch of people. Thanks for everything...

let's cut through all the talk of how well this thing is shipped, how great the service is and let's get to the sound. I owned a Bose accoustimass 15 system and I thought that thing was powerful and yet dynamic. Well, it looks like Aperion made my Bose for what it really is...a decent speaker ( if not lackluster compared to the s-10) for way too much. Now the Aperion sub is a speaker that cuts costs without cutting corners. The palpability of this thing right out of the box is definitive! Now with some tweaking it can really punch you in the face like it did me begging for more Aperion speakers to go with this.

If you...like me....read all the raves and still are wondering. Just cough it up man, you'll be so damn happy!
