Home Theater with a Budget of $85000, 9.4.6 Dolby Atmos Customized Home Theater System

Basic information:

System:  9.4.6 Dolby Atmos Customized Cinema

 Area: About 430 Sq ft

 Height: 11.5 ft

Investment: $85000 (Include audio and video equipment + acoustic decoration +                                     intelligent control and lighting system)

01. Speaker & Amplifiers:

This cinema system features a 9.4.6 Dolby Atmos configuration comprising 15 speakers and 4 subwoofers. It is equipped with Aperion Audio Theatrus cinema and studio monitor speakers.

A home theater with a budget of $85000 is not simply about stacking equipment. More importantly, it must be executed, designed, installed, and tuned according to the technical standards of home theaters.

In this project, the design and installation of all speakers will be conducted strictly with the "Dolby White Paper" from Dolby's official website. The Dolby White Paper outlines specific requirements for each speaker's installation positions and angles, including the main speaker, surround speakers, and ceiling speakers.

Front three channels: Aperion Theatrus T80 Dual 8" Monitor Speaker x 3

The speakers are installed behind the projector screen and designed to deliver a high sound pressure level, reaching a maximum of 122 dB. Each speaker features an AMT ribbon tweeter, two independent 2-inch soft dome midrange units, and two 8-inch Curv cone woofers. This combination allows the speakers to achieve both high sound pressure and exceptional HiFi sound quality.

A speaker placed behind a projection screen can result in a loss of high-frequency sound. A high-frequency adjustment function can be used to address this issue. This function improves the sensitivity of the high frequencies, compensating for the reduction in high-frequency energy caused by the screen.

Tips: Speakers installed behind a projector screen should be positioned at a certain distance from the screen. If the speakers are placed too close, they can cause comb filtering issues. Therefore, the distance between the front of the speakers and the screen should generally be maintained at about 6 to 10 inches (15 to 25 centimeters).

Front L/R wide channels: Aperion Theatrus T80W Dual 8" In-Wall Speaker x 2

The T80W is a dual 8-inch in-wall speaker from the Theatrus series by Aperion Audio. It features a metal front panel and hooks on both sides, making it well-suited for use as a surround channel speaker. This speaker can be seamlessly embedded into the wall for a clean, integrated look.

Side/Rear Surround Channels: Aperion Theatrus T65W Dual 6.5" In-Wall Speakers x 4

The model is a smaller version of the T80W, featuring dual 6.5-inch in-wall speakers. It provides a cost-effective solution while delivering excellent sound performance, making it ideal for side or rear surround channels.

Tips: In some cases, the height of the tweeters in the side and rear surround speakers is installed higher than the average human head, which is incorrect. If your speakers are installed too high, it can lead to a loss of sound pressure level and diminish sound quality, especially if the speaker’s off-axis response is poor.

In a Dolby Atmos theater, height channel speakers are installed in the ceiling. If the side and rear surround speakers are positioned too high, the sound space in the upper area can be compressed, leading to a less immersive experience.

Height Channels: Aperion Theatrus T63W Single 6.5" In-Wall Speakers x 4

The T63W is a 3-Way design In-Wall Speaker, featuring an array of three (3) drivers, which fuses into a superforce of sound quality that is designed for home theater, custom installation, professional music studios, and film studios.

Please note that the installation angles refer to the speakers' horizontal and vertical positions. In this project, the angle design for the front-height channel speaker is directed towards the middle and back, featuring two tilt angles. The same configuration applies to the two-height channel speakers at the rear side.

Tips: Speaker angle requirements for Dolby Atmos and DTS-X surround sound technologies are based on two key reasons.

The main purpose of these angles is to enhance the tweeter's energy efficiency, which is closely linked to its directivity. Most home speaker tweeters have a directivity of about 60 degrees, except for professional audio speakers, which often utilize horn tweeters.

The line that is perpendicular to the tweeter is commonly referred to as the on-axis. If the tweeter has a directivity angle of 60 degrees, the sound pressure level will decrease to half its maximum value at an angle of 30 degrees on either side of the on-axis. The sound pressure level will drop significantly if the angle exceeds this range.

Secondly, the off-axis response is another important indicator of a speaker's quality. So, what is an off-axis response? It refers to how the sound quality changes when measured from a position that is not directly in front of the speaker, typically at a distance of one meter. If the sound curve measured at the off-axis position closely resembles the curve measured directly on-axis, we can conclude that the speaker has excellent off-axis response. Conversely, suppose the off-axis sound curve differs significantly from the on-axis measurement. In that case, it indicates that the speaker's off-axis response is relatively poor, resulting in a noticeable drop in sound quality when listening from positions outside the on-axis line of sight.

The AMT ribbon tweeter in the Theatrus series offers excellent on-axis and off-axis response, which is a key characteristic of this line of monitor speakers.
