The story behind the development of the Theatrus HiFi level monitor speaker series

Theatrus Story:

Before 2022, all Aperion products were focused on the home audio field. But we have always wanted to make a series of monitor speakers suitable for the Studio professional market and the home audio speaker market!

With the booming development of Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, the demand for high-quality multi-channel speakers in private home theaters is constantly increasing, with higher sound pressure levels, more excellent dynamics, better dialogue clarity, etc. Traditional speakers find it challenging to cope with these new requirements. There is no way to achieve high-level sound quality using Pro audio speakers in a small environment. How to take into account the above requirements has become a problem that troubles many people.

Our engineers began researching and developing processes to cope with this situation in 2016. To solve the above problems, traditional product design ideas can no longer meet the needs. Aperion engineers need to break out of the conventional design framework and make different attempts in many aspects, such as the layout of speaker units, the selection of new materials, the adjustment of crossovers, and the interference of projector screens, to solve one problem after another. This process involved extensive testing and iteration, ensuring the final product met the highest quality and performance standards. After 5 years of unremitting efforts, they were able to design the Theatrus HiFi-level monitoring speaker series.

Due to different application situations, the screen material, size ratio, and space area are also different. At the same time, there are multiple channels and speakers in the same environment, and the distance from each speaker to the listening position is also different. To achieve good sound imaging in various environments, the speaker units of the Theatrus monitor speaker series adopt the layout method used in professional monitoring recording studios. The sound image of each speaker is relatively concentrated, and the sound image at long distances and close distances varies little, which is suitable for placement at different distances. At the same time, it can make the sound field distribution relatively uniform in multi-channel situations.

This new series of speaker systems is used to build monitoring systems for high-quality sound reproduction of movies and TV. The products can be configured in multi-channel formats, including 5.1, 7.1, and Dolby Atmos. These systems can be used in home theaters and professional studios fields, providing studio engineers with a tool that ensures accurate sound reproduction and reliable monitoring.

 

What are the advantages of the Theatrus series?

If you use them to listen to music, the mid-high-frequency range is brilliant, with high density and rich details, and the low-frequency range is very fast and has a good sense of layering!

If you use them to build a multi-channel cinema system, the cohesive characteristics of the monitor speaker will be revealed. First, the speaker units of the entire series have a uniform consistency, and each speaker's sound connection and coordination will be more natural and smoother. In addition, the mutual interference between each channel will be minimal, the positioning of the sound field will be prominent, the transient and control will be good, and the conversion between large and small signals will come and go as it pleases and will not be mixed. It is where it should be, entirely in line with the original soundtrack of the film source, without any drag.

The energy of the Aperion`s soft-dome midrange and AMT ribbon tweeter is powerful yet not harsh, and the sound details are delicate, making it very suitable for use as a monitor speaker in a professional recording studio. In the home audio room, whether listening to music, watching movies, or playing games, the sound is very expressive and penetrating, and there is no pressure even if it is placed behind a projector screen!

Traditional hi-fi speakers cannot achieve such high sound pressure levels, and the compression tweeter of professional speakers does not have a high-frequency extension, which makes sounds harsh and unpleasant! Only by selecting these world-class materials and combining them with our engineers' four years of research and development tests can we finally achieve a single-speaker 94 dB sound pressure level - our High-Fidelity level Monitor speaker series, Theatrusl!

Aperion custom-developed AMT ribbon tweeter up to 100dB

What makes the Theatrus AMT Tweeter so unique? In the current market, there are basically two classifications of tweeter units: high sensitivity compression pro audio tweeters, which easily have more than 100 dB sensitivity, and HiFi AV tweeters, which mostly have a sensitivity of 92 dB or below. While pro audio style tweeters can handle louder sound pressures, they are known to cause fatigue easily and normally don't portray as much detail as the HiFi AV tweeter. These factors led us to shy away from a pro audio compression driver and continue the search for the perfect tweeter for our new Theatrus series. After some research, development, and testing of many different style tweeters trying to meet the requirements, we hit a wall, and development shortly stopped.

We began to design the AMT-style tweeter in 2018 as part of our Super Tweeter family. While an AMT design is nothing new to the industry, a few companies have mastered the engineering and manufacturing process, and the Aperion team has been working with and mastered the process of the core material back in 2008. The Aperion AMT tweeter can achieve 103 dB sensitivity and frequency response of up to 40 kHz, which we found perfect for both larger and medium-sized home theater rooms. Knowing that this tweeter would operate at a higher SPL, we added a protection circuit to help keep the tweeter safe. After the successful launch of the Dual Firing AMT Ribbon Super Tweeter in 2020, we knew this was the perfect technology to solve the issues at hand: high SPL, dynamically detailed high-frequencies with no distortion.

 

Germany Propex Fabrics Curv® Cone Woofers

According to our practical experience, it is difficult for the woofer unit with traditional cone materials to achieve such high sensitivity while ensuring good sound quality. Hence, we need to find some new materials for the woofer cone. After constant attempts and comparisons, our engineers finally chose Curv® material from Propex Fabrics of Germany as the woofer cone of Theatrus. Its characteristics are light and hard, with high Young's modulus and internal damping, non-absorbent, and high-temperature resistance. At the same time, it does not need to add resin to shape like other materials such as carbon fiber and Kevlar. Because these materials will greatly change the original characteristics of these materials when adding resin, most of them reduce the original excellent performance of these materials. Curv® material does not need to add any other ingredients, and it does not absorb any moisture. It will not absorb moisture in the environment like paper or other materials and become different from the initial state over time. Curv® material also integrates well with internal sound velocity transmission and internal damping, which is difficult for other materials to achieve. This is exactly the bass woofer cone material needed for the Theatrus series, which has high sensitivity and excellent sound quality.

 

Independent 2-inch soft-dome midrange driver

As we all know, home theaters pursue high sound pressure levels, and there are many ultra-large dynamic sounds. The speaker driver units have to withstand ultra-large power and need to withstand instantaneous high-energy signals. This is also challenging for most tweeters. How can we better protect the tweeter unit? In addition to adding adaptive protection circuits to it, our engineers are also looking for an ideal midrange driver unit. Let the midrange driver unit participate in distributing these high-power and high-dynamic signals to reduce the pressure on the tweeter. Then, the midrange driver unit itself also needs high sensitivity to match the Theatrus woofer and tweeter. This means that we need a midrange driver unit that is not too big, has high efficiency, high power, and has a sound quality that can fully match this system. The soft-dome midrange driver, which is widely used in recording studios, came into the sight of our engineers. Yes, this is what Theatrus needs! So we designed 2-inch and 3-inch soft-dome midranges and used them in the Theatrus series. This is indeed a perfect match!

 

Sound Adjustment

 

Custom-built home theaters often feature the front three channels positioned behind the projector screen. This setup can reduce high-frequency sound because the screen attenuates these frequencies within a specific band. Furthermore, speaker installation can vary between two primary scenarios: In-Wall (Baffle) or On-Wall (Free Field) installation. Each of these configurations can significantly impact the low-frequency response of the speakers. To address these challenges, our engineers have designed a solution with a high-frequency equalization jumper for before-screen and behind-screen setups and a low-frequency adjustment jumper for In-Wall and On-Wall installations. Users can ensure that the high-frequency sensitivity remains consistent regardless of the installation type by selecting the appropriate setting using the provided jumpers. This feature helps maintain a uniform sound pressure level across Theatrus speakers in various application environments, ensuring optimal audio performance.

No.2 Theatrus T65 Dual 6.5" Cinema/Studio Monitor Speaker

 

T65 is the younger brother of T80. While the tweeter and midrange units are identical in both models, the T65 features a 6.5-inch woofer. Additionally, its box is smaller, making it more suitable for slightly smaller spaces. The T65 is also available at a more affordable price.

The APERION TC65 is a 2-Way design, which fuses into a superforce of sound quality that is designed for home theater, custom installation, professional music studios, and film studios. It's not all about sound though, the speaker has a clean and smooth appearance. High frequency is reproduced brilliantly wtih the Aperion crafted AMT Haier Ribbon Tweeter, and enhanced midrange and  low end is produced by Dual 6.5" Woofers which were crafted from German Propex Fabrics Curv material. The TC65 offers higher sound pressure levels, suitable for larger listening environments. High-Efficiency plus High-Power makes for an explosively wide sound field.
